Review Summary

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Best budget cordless clipper
  • Color-coded guide combs
  • Detachable, rinseable blade
  • 3-year warranty
  • World-wide voltage (110 – 240V) for international use

Cons

  • No taper lever for precision cutting lengths
  • Long charge time – 12 hours
  • Motor may not be adequate for thick, coarse hair

The Wahl Color Pro Cordless is arguable the best budget cordless hair clipper on the market right now.

For what you get shipped in the box, I find it hard to see how Wahl can price it so low.

Apart from a barber cape, everything you need to cut, blend and taper hair at home, is included with this product.

Look, it’s not the best men’s hair clipper by any means.

The appeal lies primarily in its price-point, but it also has some decent accessories and is easy to use.

For a basic clipper that will do a job, without expecting professional-grade features, the Wahl Color Pro Cordless hair clipper is a great choice.

Here’s my honest review of the Color Pro Cordless..

Features

Stainless Steel Blade

Just like 99% of hair clippers, the Wahl Color Pro has a stainless steel cutting blade.

The blade is self-sharpening which eliminates the bother of getting them professionally sharpened.

It is made from strong, rust-free stainless steel, which has been the industry standard for years.

Although steel does tend to heat up after prolonged use, if you’re just going to be using these clippers for the occasional haircut at home, it is absolutely fine.

I like the fact it is detachable, and so can be removed for cleaning.

Use the supplied cleaning brush to remove any debris and then rinse the blade under the tap. Easy.

Color-Coded Guide Combs

The Wahl Color Pro Cordless guide combs are the no.1 reason (in my opinion) these clippers are so successful.

Okay, the clipper needs to be able to do a decent job at cutting hair – but it’s the colored combs that set the clippers apart.

The set of combs include 8 guide lengths from 1 inch to 1/8th inch, and 2 angled guide combs to trim around the ears.

Here are the actual sizes of guide combs you get in the box:

  • No. 8 – 1″ (25mm)
  • No. 7 – 7/8″ (22mm)
  • No. 6 – 3/4″ (19mm)
  • No. 5 – 5/8″ (16mm)
  • No. 4 – 1/2″ (13mm)
  • No. 3 – 3/8″ (10mm)
  • No. 2 – 1/4″ (6mm)
  • No. 1 – 1/8″ (3mm)
  • 2 angled taper combs for left and right ear

By color coordinating the clipper guards with the length of the cut, makes life so much easier for the average home user.

Not only are the guide combs colored, the corresponding lengths and matching colors are also printed on the front of the clipper itself.

A simple idea, but also a really useful one.

Unless you are genuinely color blind, you really can’t get the desired cutting length wrong.

The guide combs are also made from strong, hard plastic and click firmly and securely into place. There’s little danger of them falling off whilst in use.

There’s absolutely no need to upgrade these guide combs, which can’t be said for a lot of lower-priced clippers.

Motor

The Wahl Color Pro motor is a standard NiMH Battery.

Amazon describes it as “heavy-duty”. It clearly isn’t that.

I would describe it as “adequate”.

At this price point, you ain’t going to get a top-of-the-range rotary or electromagnetic motor.

In fact, it’s very hard to find information on the grade/power of the motor, other than it’s a rotary motor using a StandardNiMH Battery.

A rotary motor is pretty standard in budget clippers and you shouldn’t expect anything other than ‘adequate performance’ with the motor that comes with the cordless Color Pro.

It will be no good for continuous, barbershop use, but for a twice-monthly or weekly tidy-up hair cut at home, the motor will do a decent job.

Cord or Cordless Operation

Although this is a cordless hair clipper, it can still be used whilst plugged in and connected to the mains.

This is a handy feature if you start to run out of juice, mid-cut.

On a full charge, the clipper should run for around 60 mins.

That’s a pretty decent run-time.

Unfortunately, it takes 12 hours to fully charge.

FAQs

Q. Apart from the cord, what is the difference between the cordless and the corded Wahl Pro?

A. You usually sacrifice motor power with cordless clippers and that’s the same with the Wahl Pro models. Although Wahl doesn’t specify what motors they use, customer feedback suggests the corded model runs consistently stronger than the cordless – which makes sense.

Q. Can I use the Wahl Color Pro to cut thick hair?

A. Yes and No. The thicker, more coarse hair will just take longer to cut. Personally, I would opt for a more powerful clipper for this type of hair. For budget go for the Wahl Elite Pro. For mid-range, something like the Oster Fast Feed or Wahl Magic Clip.

Q. Is it as noisy as the corded version?

A. The Color Pro Cordless is quieter than the corded model, but not by much.

Q. Will it work in Europe without a voltage adapter?

A. Yes, it has a worldwide voltage which means you can use it in Europe which uses a 220v system.

Q. Can I use the Color Pro Cordless to shave my bald head?

A. I wouldn’t recommend it. The cutting blade and cutting speed aren’t of sufficient quality to cut to such a short length.

Alternative Hair Clippers To Consider

Unfortunately, there aren’t any comparable cordless clippers at this price considering what you get.

If you can increase your budget and relax your requirements here are a couple of options:

Wahl Elite Pro High-Performance Hair Cut Kit

The Wahl Elite Pro is a corded clipper that delivers an excellent cut and comes with premium-grade guide combs.

I would consider it the best budget to mid-range hair clipper.

It’s a step up in price and it’s only available as a corded clipper.

If you can stretch the budget and happy with a trailing cord, I would purchase this clipper every time.

Remington HC4250 Short Cut Pro Self-Haircut Kit

Like the Wahl Elite Pro, the Remington HC4250 is more expensive than the Wahl Color Pro Cordless.

The unique selling point of the HC4250 is its simplicity, ergonomic shape, and ease of use.

If you want a clipper to cut your own hair, then Remington has designed a clipper specifically for this task.

Although not much to look at, the HC4250 is a quality product that does an excellent job at cutting hair.

Its thousands of happy users (including me) will gladly testify.

Final Thoughts

You just can’t fault this clipper in terms of value for money, ease of use, performance, and the accessories it comes shipped with.

Don’t expect a powerful clipper that will slice through hair like a hot knife through butter.

At this price point, you won’t get that – especially as a cordless model.

If you want a cordless clipper with more power and cutting speed, the Wahl Cordless Magic Clip is hard to beat.

However, with the Wahl Color Pro Cordless, you get a basic clipper that will do a decent job at cutting hair.

I like the color guide combs, and the freedom this budget cordless clipper gives you.

If you can afford a little extra, consider the awesome Wahl Elite Pro Haircutting Kit.
