Review Summary
The Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit is a revolutionary design hair clipper.
Apart from a couple of ‘copy-cat’ models, there’s nothing like these clippers on the market.
Not only is this do-it-yourself clipper a unique concept, but it also performs incredibly well for cutting hair at home.
The wide, curved-shaped blade gives a greater coverage for cutting hair and it’s just so incredibly easy to use.
The HC4250 doesn’t have the strongest motor, but for most gents looking for a home-use clipper, it is a great bit of kit.

- Can be used corded or cordless
- Ergonomic design
- Easy to handle/use
- Waterproof – Can be cleaned under running water

The demand for cordless hair clippers that can be easily used by the ‘Average Joe’, has increased dramatically, especially since the pandemic of 2020/21.
I paid well over the odds for the Remington HC4250 because the demand at the time was so high.
However, in order to provide you with the best possible review, I bit the bullet and bought it.
You’re welcome. π
Mine is titled ‘QuickCut’ rather than ‘ShortCut’ – but they are exactly the same model.

Features
Ergonomic Design
The ergonomic features of a tool aren’t something I usually highlight.
However, the Remington HC4250 Hair Clipper is as effective as it is, because of the ergonomic design.
It fits neatly into the palm of your hand and you can easily maneuver it into the exact place to cut your hair.
Ideal for cutting the back and sides, which often can be tricky with other more bulky machines.
The sides are made of rubber which gives you more grip and control.
It’s just a well-balanced, easy-to-use hair clipper.
Curved Cutting Blade
The curved cutting blade is what makes the Remington Shortcut Pro a ‘stand out’ hair clipper.
The angled blade follows the natural contours of your head which makes it easier to cut your hair evenly.
It’s a stainless steel blade which is the industry standard but comes in at over 6cm’s in length.
That’s around twice as long as a regular hair clipper blade!
The shape and size of the blade mean you can cut more hair in less time.
I’m really impressed with the cutting blade and believe it could be the future for self-cut hair clippers.
Not only that, it can be easily removed for cleaning or replacing.
Waterproof

It’s not likely you’ll be cutting your hair whilst having a shower, but being waterproof means you can clean and wash your Remington HC4250 Hair Clipper under running water.
This is a necessary feature in my book.
It’s much easier and quicker to rinse the clipper in water than it is to clean it with a brush.
The clipper has a ‘washout port’ at the front. It’s like a little, horizontal grill.
This is where you rinse the clipper under running water to remove hair and debris.
Lithium, Rechargeable Battery
It comes with a decent lithium battery.
Lithium batteries are the best type of batteries for cordless hair clippers, trimmers, or shavers. They have a much longer lifetime use than other batteries.
You get around 40 minutes of use after a 4-hour charge.
My advice would be to fully charge the clipper after every haircut.
When it’s plugged in, there’s a blue flashing light on the unit to indicate it’s charging.
Cord/Cordless Use
If you forget to charge the hair clipper between cuts, and you run out of juice midway through your trim, you have the option of plugging it into the mains.
Although not ideal to use it this way due to the trailing cable getting in the way, it might just save you if you’re pressed for time and need to finish your cut.
What Is In The Box?
Remington HC4250 Hair Clipper
9 Guide Combs
You get 9 guide combs with the clipper, giving you the option of cutting your hair from 1/16″ toΒ 5/8″ (1.5mm up to 15mm).
The attachment combs certainly aren’t as good quality as you get with the Wahl Elite Pro home use clippers, but they are good enough for occasional use.

Accessories
Hard Travel/Storage Case
Although not made by Remington, this Aproca Hard Travel Storage Case is designed for the Remington HC4250.
I much prefer to keep clipper/trimmer tools in a hard case.
It helps keep everything together and prevents accidental damage.
Lubricating Oil
The clipper comes supplied with a very small bottle of oil.
Do yourself a favor and order a bottle at the same time as you buy the clipper.
The Wahl Hair Clipper Oil is the stuff I use and recommend.
How To Use The Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro
Here’s a short video demonstrating how easy it is to use this clipper..
Here’s a really great video for anyone interested in using it for the bald look..
Cleaning And Maintenance
After each use, brush the accumulated hair from the cutters with the cleaning brush supplied.
Rinsing your blades
– Turn clipper on and rinse blades under running water.
– Turn off the clipper and detach blades. Rinse the inside of the blades.
– Ensure all loose hairs and debris are removed from the blades.
– Once blades are cleaned, ensure the blades and unit are thoroughly wiped dry.
Do not rinse when the clipper is plugged in.
Oiling the clipper
As with any clipper, you should oil it before and after every use.
– Place 2 to 3 drops of lubricating oil on the cutting blade and turn on the clipper.
The oil should distribute on its own. Wipe off any excess oil.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Unique extra wide, curved blade
- Can be used corded or cordless
- Ergonomic design – Easy to use
- Waterproof – Can be cleaned under running water
Cons
- Long 4 hour charge time
- Not suitable for daily use or extra thick coarse hair
Who Is It Suitable For?
- Anyone who wants to cut their own hair
- If you want a basic trim, crew cut or buzz cut (although you can also create a fade effect with these clippers if you’re more adventurous)
- If you want a nearly bald look
- Someone looking for a solid, easy-to-use tool to cut hair quickly and to a good finish
Alternative Self-Cut Hair Clippers To Consider
There is a couple of knock-off similar self-cut clippers that have the same shape and design.
MANGROOMER Ultimate Pro
The MANGROOMER Ultimate Pro is very similar to the Remington but it doesn’t have a curved blade.
Although the MANGROOMER is cheaper to buy, you’ll do yourself a disservice by not getting the superior curve blade of the Remington.

Skull Shaver Beast Clipper
This cool-looking self-cut clipper has a different ergonomic setup to the Remington.
Although I’ve not used it myself, I’ve read that it cuts really well.
There have been motor issues reported by some reviewers.
The blade is much smaller and without the unique curve of the Remington.

Remington HC4240 vs HC4250
Obviously, the HC4250 is the newer model. However, there isn’t much difference between the 2 clippers.
The Remington HC4240 is an aqua blue color and you can only rinse the blade clean.
The HC4250 is red and fully waterproof.
Other than that I don’t think there’s anything else different between them.
If you’ve got the HC4240 I’d keep it, rather than upgrading to the newer HC4250.
FAQs
Q. Can this be used to cut my bald head?
A. This is a question asked more than any other.
Yes, it can. Use it without any comb attachments and you’ll get a fairly close shave. Not razor smooth. More like a half-day to a days’ growth look. Check out the video above.
For a completely bald head, you should consider a more dedicated clipper such as the Wahl Balding Clipper or the excellent BabylissPro FOILFX02 Double Foil Shaver.
Q. Is it only available to use at 110 volts?
A. It all depends on where you buy the Remington HC4250. If you buy it from the US it should be 110v. UK/Europe should have 220v models. Check before you buy.
Q. Can I trim my beard with this clipper?
A. Yes you can trim your beard. Just go slowly to avoid pulling or snagging. It works really well without any guide combs attached to trim your beard edges.
Due to the curve of the blade, it is more suited to the head though.
Final Thoughts
For a fast, even hair cut that you can do at home, the Remington HC4250 Shortcut Pro Self-Haircut Kit is highly recommended.
Its small size, lightweight, ergonomic handling, and unique curve blade design make it the easiest air clipper to use – that I’ve reviewed.
The clipper is definitely suited to a buzz cut style or near bald look. Anything longer and I would consider going for a higher-end hair clipper model.
It’s also perfect for traveling.
