Best back shaver review

Having a hairy back isn’t the worst thing that will ever happen to you.

However, it’s not for everyone and I’m pretty sure most ladies aren’t over-excited to see a man with one.

How’s this for a stat:

According to a Harris Interactive survey 1,000 women between 18 and 44, more than 90% find back hair unattractive

A back shaver is one of those grooming tools you’ll actually be grateful for.

Choosing the best back shaver isn’t so hard because they all do a decent job.

Depending on whether you want an electric device or a manual one, there are a few good ones out there.

In a hurry?

Here’s my number 1 top pick:

Best Manual Back Shaver

Bakblade 2.0 Plus

The Bakblade 2.0 Plus is my top choice out of all the back shavers I’ve reviewed here – because of its simplicity.

I like tools that do the job without having to add unnecessary ‘bells and whistles’.

The Bakblade is just that.

It is made from hard plastic, has a long, easy-grip, ergonomic handle to reach all the areas of your back, and uses 2 blades to make quick work of removing all your hair.

The blades are protected in their plastic cartridges so the shaver can be safely used wet or dry.

No nicks or cuts to the skin.

I like this because I don’t always want to jump in the shower to shave my back.

If you keep on top of your grooming routine, a quick back shave is all that’s needed.

BRO SHAVER 2.2 Back Hair Shaver

The Bro Shaver 2.2 is another no-nonsense back shaver that gets the job done with very few moving parts.

It doesn’t quite have the ergonomic design and quality of the Bakblade, but it makes up for it with its blades.

The Bro Shaver uses regular double-edge safety razors that you simply slot into the shaving head.

It takes 3 razors to form the edge of the cutting cartridge.

This makes refills much cheaper.

You can buy a pack of 50 for around ten bucks.

It is quite cheap-looking and basic and only uses 1 blade edge to cut your back hair.

So it will take a little longer to shave your back, compared to the Bakblade 2.0 Plus.

However, it still does a decent job and has plenty of positive reviews.

The only downside that I’ve discovered, is the Bro Shaver has a tendency to cut your skin.

Unless the blades are lined up perfectly (we’re talking less than a millimeter) you can easily nick your skin.

I must admit, I like the marketing behind the Bro Shaver and I can see it becoming a very popular choice.

Here’s the Bro Shaver in action:

BakBlade 2.0 Plus Vs Bro Shaver 2.2

Despite the cheap and easy-to-fit safety razors the Bro Shaver uses, the fact you may cut yourself if you don’t align the blades 100% makes me very nervous.

The Bakblade on the other hand, with its safety cartridge, is 100% safe.

Sure you may spend more on the replacement blades, but as you won’t need to replace them very often, it’s a small price to pay.

Here’s a good video from the BeardTube highlighting this very fact:

Best Electric Back Shaver

If you prefer to let a machine take the strain, there are a couple of recommended electric back shavers that will de-fleece you in no-time.

MANGROOMER Ultimate Pro Back Shaver

Most electric back shavers come as part of a complete body groomer set.

Which is fine. They still work as they should, but the cutting head is usually much smaller, so it takes longer to shave your back.

The MANGROOMER Ultimate Pro Back Shaver is one of the very few electric shavers designed as a dedicated back shaver.

MANGROOMER has a range of back shavers, but their latest design – the ‘Ultimate Pro‘ is certainly their best.

It has all the features you would expect, such as:

  • Ergonomic, extendable, rubber handle
  • Large cutting blade
  • Quick recharge time
  • Power-burst mode for thick, coarse hair
  • 2 attachment heads – One is a foil body groomer for shorter hairs

The downside to the Ultimate pro is you can’t use it in the shower.

It is rinseable only – not waterproof.

Philips Norelco Bodygroom Series 3500

Philips are specialists when it comes to body grooming.

Their Bodygroom Series leads the way, and the BodyGroom Series 3500 has a simple attachment to allow you to shave your back as well as the rest of your body.

The benefits of this shaver are you can use it to shave your entire body.

Philips Norelco Bodygroom Series 3500, BG5025/49, Showerproof Lithium-Ion Body Hair Trimmer for Men with Back Shaver

It’s also showerproof if you prefer to de-hair yourself in the shower.

For the money, this is a great multi-purpose tool.

However, if you’re just looking for a dedicated back shaver, the small cutting head means the Philips 3500 Series will take you longer to shave your back.

FAQs

Q. How often do you need to shave your back?

A. It depends on how hairy you are and how fast your back hair grows. On average it’s usually 2-3 months+ between shaves.

Q. Do I shave my back wet or dry?

A. Depending on what back shaver you use, either method is fine. I shave my back dry – in the shower, then shower off when done.

Q. Does back hair grow back faster and thicker if you shave it?

A. No. Your back hair will not grow back any different once you start shaving it.

Final Thoughts

Shaving your back is not something you need to do every day – even every month.

But it does need to be done if you want your back to be smooth and clean-shaven.

In my opinion, there are 3 criteria when shaving your back and for choosing the best back shaver:

  1. It needs to be done quickly
  2. It needs to be done easily
  3. It needs to be done without cutting yourself

The Bakblade 2.0 Plus fits the bill and has been my go-to back shaver for some time now.
